Housing Industry Association (HIA) is the official body of Australia’s home building industry. As the only national industry association for Australian building professionals, we represent the interests of the housing industry at regional and national levels.

The Role
We are seeking to appoint a Senior Economist as a member of the HIA Economics team. Our team is a source of information on industry conditions, emerging trends, future scenarios and policy advice in all states and territories.
HIA Economics produces papers and releases on the Australian housing industry outlook, strategic reviews and business plans, policy research impact statements, tailored market research, presentations and briefings.
There are two primary purposes of the Senior Economist role. The first is to provide high level policy advice and analysis to HIA staff and members, in addition to the wider residential construction industry. The second is to effectively present and communicate the views of HIA in relation to economic policies affecting housing to members, wider industry stakeholders, and media.
Day-to-day, the role will:
- Contribute to the development of housing and economic policy
- Perform economic modelling, assessment and analysis to assist with HIA communications for members, internal staff and external stakeholders
- Assist with the research and preparation of HIA economic publications, research projects and housing market forecasts
- Provide presentations to members, the media and other key stakeholders
- Represent HIA policy views in the media
Key responsibilities of the role:
Provide an active contribution to the development of policy in the areas of housing affordability, taxation, population and economic analysis of broader industry policy issues
- Contribute to national and regional policy development including support for government inquiries, taskforces and commissions
- Economic modeling and assessment that can be used in the development of new, and advancement of existing, HIA policies
- Policy support and analysis for major submissions, representation to governments, executive briefs, and other HIA communications
- Assist the Chief Economist and Senior Executive in shaping and developing industry and economic policy for the association
- Assist the Chief Economist in shaping and developing existing and new HIA economics publications and research projects
- Prepare high-level economic and econometric research, analysis and reports across all areas of HIA which may be suitable for internal staff, HIA members and external stakeholders
- Statistical analysis and interpretation of data to assist with the development and communication of new and existing policy
- Divulge and explain key government policy that impacts on new housing and renovation activity to the HIA membership, internal staff and industry stakeholders
- Maintain strategic alliances with HIA members and broader industry representatives, and government representatives
- Provide presentations to members, the media, and key stakeholders around Australia
- Communicate effectively with television, print, radio and on-line media
- Attend government and other industry stakeholder events to further the HIA advocacy agenda and strengthen strategic relationships
- Contribute to regular meetings of the National Policy Team and Regional Executive Directors in the development of housing policy, and inform of key industry developments
- Negotiate and collaborate with in-house teams, internal stakeholders and key external stakeholders in the delivery of key projects
- Collate analysis, information and reports from various parties to compile analyses and final reports
- In relation to Australian Construction Insights, the consultancy arm of HIA Economics
- Scope and develop research projects and proposals
- Undertake research for specific projects

The successful candidate will demonstrate relevant qualifications and:
- This role requires strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Extensive experience in writing convincing reports, forecasts and analysis
- Experience delivering engaging economic and related policy information at industry and public events
- Qualifications and experience in economics and data analysis
- Experience in econometrics and/or data analysis would be viewed favourably
